Region 3 Friday Update for 9/21/2018

Hello SNAP-Ed Friends,

Before jumping into the many words below, I would just like to share a few words that are keeping me sane today…

“People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don’t even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child – our own two eyes. All is a miracle.”

And

“Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet.”
– Thich Nhat Hanh

We are looking forward to seeing all of you next week at our regional meeting to kick off FFY2019! Just a few updates and reminders as we prepare for our time together:

  • If you are attending Friday 9/28, please email Acacia by 5pm TODAY if you would like a boxed lunch! See email from Acacia on 9/17 for lunch menu.
  • We are planning a dinner in Burlington on Thursday 9/27, for anyone who would like to join. We will meet at the Train Wreck Bar & Grill in Burlington, approximate time of 5:30pm.  We’ll get a head count at the meeting on Thursday so we can call ahead for a table.
  • Save yourself a stamp, and bring your time and effort certifications to the meeting, where you can hand them directly to Kim!
  • We will be following eco-friendly practices at our meeting – please bring a re-usable water bottle, coffee cup, and reusable utensils if you have them! We will have water, coffee and tea, and compostable utensils and cups for anyone who needs them.
  • Agenda is attached.

Report: Role of Law and Policy to Increase Fruit and Vegetable Intake in the United States

Fruit and vegetable consumption is used in this first-in-a-series report.  Handy graphics may be useful in SNAP-Ed planning with partners.  One uses the social ecological model to delineate factors driving consumption while another identifies policy levers that include the built, economic and informational environments.

Webinar: The Healthy Communities Study: How Community Programs and Policies are Related to Children’s Health – September 25 at Noon

The National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR) is hosting this Connect & Explore webinar.  Across the United States, communities are implementing programs and policies to address the childhood obesity epidemic.  These programs vary widely in their approaches, however previous studies have not examined these variations and their effects on childhood obesity outcomes such as BMI, nutrition and physical activity.  Dada from this study suggest that children tend to have a lower BMI when living in communities with policies and programs that target physical activity and nutrition behaviors through efforts that are longer in duration, reach more children, and include policy and environmental changes.  Register to attend.
