Community Action Center Whitman County SNAP Ed Program
About Us
CAC has implemented PSE in our food bank, and offered direct education to food bank clients and in local rural schools. Over the past three years we have seen community buy-in for PSE and better outcomes through PSE than direct education. We have an invitation and the experience to help pantries examine their current situation, think through a menu of healthy pantry PSE options, and quickly adopt changes. For SNAP-Ed FFY21-FFY23 CAC proposes: (1) a Mobile Farmstand and (2) Healthy Pantries. The project will serve SNAP-Ed eligible Census tracts in Pullman and co-locate services with food pantries. The Mobile Farmstand will operate like a portable, mini farmers’ market, which will procure food from local farmers and use a pay-what-you-can model. Healthy Pantries focuses on training and technical assistance to increase the capacity of food pantry managers in Whitman County to incorporate PSE. To complement PSE strategies, we will design and carry out a health promotion strategy: a Social Marketing Campaign highlighting the importance of family and community meals for health.
