Ingredients
- 2 cups raisins
- 2 cups granola
- 20 graham crackers, crushed
- 1½ cup peanut butter
- 2 cups vanilla yogurt
- 2 cups bran cereal
- 1 cup shredded coconut

- Whole grain cereal is a great source of fiber, which helps your body digest your food.
- Look for any flavor low fat yogurt. Greek yogurt is a great source of protein and calcium.
- If you like fresh fruit, add blueberries to represent rocks.
Directions
- Wash hands with soap and water.
- Layer about a teaspoon of each of the following in order:
- Raisins (rocks)
- Granola (pebbles)
- Graham cracker crumbs (sand)
- Yogurt (silt)
- Peanut butter (clay)
- Bran cereal (dead leaves)
- Sprinkle a small amount of shredded coconut (worms) on top.
Cook Together! Making Edible Soil Cups with Kids
This is a fun educational activity to do with kids. They have a chance to add each layer while learning about the different layers of soil. Each layer is important to help plants grow and has its own purpose.
Easy Tasks
- Gather ingredients and equipment.
- Sprinkle dry ingredients into each cup.
Intermediate Tasks
- Crush graham crackers to make crumbs.
- Scoop and pour yogurt.
Difficult Tasks
- Scoop and drop peanut butter layer into the cups. Tip: warm up the peanut butter in the microwave for a few seconds before adding it to the cup.
